The SDS (Secure Delivery System) is a control and reporting system that automates
the dispensing and tracking of small tools and consumable items in the work place.
SDS will replace the manned function of the tool-crib attendant. It is designed to
install in standard vending machines or in custom built secure storage for items that
are not suitable for delivery through standard machines. It addresses the issues of
restricting access exclusively to authorized users while creating records of each use
by users.
SDS adds new parameters to the process of authorizing item delivery. Typical
vending applications approve product delivery based only on payment of
adequate money in an acceptable form. SDS authorizes product delivery only if
the cardholder has adequate funds available and also is authorized to access the
specific item or class of items.
The system uses the core technology of the QI SmartKit smart card payment
system to authorize and record product delivery. It uses the standard QI SmartKit
vending controller as the control module. The SDS system can operate either
off-line or on-line to a host computer that maintains the system management
database. The on-line system is simple because the account balance for the
cardholder can be maintained in a host system, and all data transfer to the host
system is via real time serial data communication. For off-line operation, stored
value cards and card reload facilities are required. For on-line operation, the
cards can be simple memory cards used only as secure ID badges.
SDS works with any modern vending machine, allowing for endless applications
for tracking items such as industrial shop supplies, industrial tools, drugs and
pharmaceutical supplies, printer cartridges and office supplies, or any other small
items that require careful monitoring.
