Smart cards and QI

Since 1997 QI Systems Inc. (formerly QI Technologies Corp.) has been involved in the design, development and production of smart card payment terminals and associated products for various UPOS applications, especially soft drink and snack vending as well as others cited above. QI also has a smart card reader and host workstation software for secure on-line access or product delivery. QI has its own proprietary smart card for both UPOS and ID/access applications.
QI's payment terminals are certified for both Visa Cash and Mondex (MasterCard) which are two of the most common open-cash smart card payment schemes. As well, QI has implemented some closed-cash (proprietary) payment schemes including those supported by Touch Technologies and Diebold (both are large US system integrators), Telus, and Cantv (the Venezuelan telephone company).

Opportunities and growth prospects for smart cards are exciting and potentially very rewarding. In the United States alone are more than 7 million vending machines with 37 billion dollars in annual sales. Conversion of just 10 percent of these to smart card payment indicates a $400 US million dollar market. Laundry machines, newspaper boxes, copiers, parking, and transit are some of the other potentially lucrative opportunities.

QI is also beginning to provide turnkey systems for "small" applications. System integration components include payment or access terminals, smart cards, value reload and/or ID programming facilities, back-end host software, and systems knowledge and experience. Initially, QI's installations would involve controlled access to small buildings (which might also include copiers, printers, vending machines, etc), payment for access to transit systems, access to and transactions archiving at municipal water supply stations for tankers, and access to and/or payment at other venues.
